At Wood Farm we are passionate about our free range hens and the delicious eggs they produce. We always strive to ensure that our birds have the happiest and healthiest free range lifestyle possible.

To boost our ‘green’ credentials, we mill our own feed for the hens on the farm. Using wheat from our farm and neighbouring farmers, we add vitamins, probiotics and enriched natural yeasts to keep the birds in the peak of health.

Our latest priority has been to make Wood Farm as sustainable as we can by creating our own renewable energy. We have installed solar panels on one of our buildings to produce electricity to power the feed mill.

Most recently we have built an anaerobic digester (“AD”) plant which is fuelled with our home-grown rye and maize crops.

The AD process breaks down this 100% plant-based feed stock to produce methane. This then runs our generator transforming the methane into green electricity and renewable heat. We use about 10% of this home-made energy on the farm while the rest goes into the grid, providing enough electricity to power 340 local homes!

Once digested by the AD, the crop is separated into solid and liquid. These, along with our chicken manure, are applied onto our fields as valuable sources of natural fertiliser. This drives the yields of next year’s crops, completing our ‘full circle’!

With help from a Leader Grant, we now have a pelleting and bagging plant of farm. This enables us to hammer, pellet, bag and pack all on our family farm keeping our carbon footprint at an all-time low.  Our aim is to produce greener gardening products to our customers in the most environmentally friendly way possible. We are dedicated to ensure that each and every process has the minimum impact on the environment
